I'm extremely proud to introduce wings + horns to our gravitypope fans. At gravitypope we spend each year searching for unique new footwear and fashion designers. We find amazing things from all over the world: Scandinavia, U.S.A, Japan, Europe and Brazil.. But for the first time in a very long time I'm able to talk about a new Canadian brand.. being Canadian this is a special moment for me.
Spring 2008's line of Converse by Jon Varvatos has arrived at gravitypope and gravitypope.com! They're a great alternative to regular old chucks, offering nice leather details, a slimmed down sole, and a more mature, fashionable look.
Available in olive and charcoal these chucks are great everyday kicks.
Paul Smith girls will be happy to find a few new casual styles from our favourite brit. Paul Smith's highly sought after high-tops return in a black and floral print. New this season is a converse inspired circular patch on the ankle in purple patent leather that simply states "Paul".
There's plenty more to see at gravitypope.com (just wait until you see the heels and dress shoes from Paul)
A new brand at gravitypope this year is YMC - short for 'You Must Create' a designer brand from London that started out with clothing but has branched into footwear in recent years. Their spring/summer 2008 collection utilizes a 40's and 50's pre-surf Hollywood leasure to create a line that is truly unique.
First to arrive from YMC at gravitypope is the classic styled plimsole runner.

I got an update from our Store Manager in Calgary, Bre, about the Vans in the Paul Smith stripe in the last posting. These are a special edition Vault Vans series produced in the Maharam fabric designed by Paul Smith.
Vans that were designed exclusively by Paul Smith himself, much like the Mac Jacobs series of Vans, are expected in April at gravitypope. You can check out a sneak peek here.
Designer collaborations are popping up in nearly every popular sneaker brand lately. Converse has worked with John Varvatos, Puma with Alexander McQueen, and most sneakerheads are familiar with the extremely popular Marc Jacobs Vans. This season Vans continues to work with a-list designers by producing a limited line of their classics in the Paul Smith stripes. This series of sneakers are a nice addition to this season's line of sneakers. Make a Vans shoe in a classy pattern and they look almost dressy, and these Paul Smith Vans are no exception.
Available in the Classic Slip-On, the Sk8 Hi, and the Chukka Boot, any Vans fan should be able to find a pair of Paul Smith stripes to adorn their feet.
Next to the 'Chukka Boot', the low cut lace up 'Era' is my favourite Vans shoe, they have a great casual look and an old school sneaker feel. This season, a number of different era styles has arrived at gravitypope.
Vans really seems to know their customers and their place in pop culture. The Vans Classic Slip-On is almost an icon of footwear in skateboarding, fashion and music. Vans offers such a wide variety of finishes and materials, but also offering limited edition sneakers from famous designers and famous bands almost any Vans fan can find something new and exciting to buy every season.
Vans has brought back a new version of the Iron Maiden Vans, the 'Troopers' in the 'Sk8 Hi' and the 'Classic Slip-On' will make thrashers and former thrashers alike very happy. If you picked up last season's Iron Maiden 'Killers' you've got a great little metal Vans collection going. Moving into slightly more alternative rock scenes, new this season are the Johnny Ramones Vans in the 'Classic Slip-On'.
There's plenty more Vans to see in gravitypope stores in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver and at gravitypope.com!
It may still be minus 15 degrees celcius and snowing outside here in Edmonton, Canada but spring is starting to arrive in the Gravity Pope warehouse. We've received about 40 new pairs of Adidas sneakers for men and women. I love when the spring shoes start arriving, because we're usually in the thick of winter here and the bright colours bring that bit of hope for spring that we really need around here. At Gravity Pope we carry Adidas Originals and the Adidas Sleek Series for women. There's always interesting re-issues of classic Adidas sneakers in great new colours, materials and patterns.
When the shipping / receiving girls opened up the boxes, the first shoe to catch my eye was definitely the superstar and pro-model in crocodile leather with suede stripes.
The sneakers coming from Adidas are getting better and better every season. In the last few season's we've seen several styles in faux snake leather, but these styles are louder and much more unusual than last year. I think Adidas may be starting to feel the pressure from all the new sneaker companies out there like Creative Recreation and Alife that consistently put out new, unusual and unique sneakers. I'm glad to see that they're stepping up, mixing their well-known, well-loved classics with new materials to achieve a unique, but still classic style.
The fall saw the intoduction of Adidas' cartoon camo print, we carried the pro-model and the superstar in the pattern and this season it has continued in more colours on the new Stan Smith Safety Series. We have a velcro and a lace up version.
For the longest time Adidas has stuck in the back of my mind as a shoe company that puts out some pretty good shoes, but nothing I would be interested in buying or wearing. This year they have really changed my mind about their shoes. They've put out some pretty unique sneakers but they've also issued lots of the old classics in great new materials and colours.
When it comes to Adidas sneakers I don't think you can get any more classic than the Gazelle. We've got 6 new styles of the Gazelle at Gravity Pope. These two are my favourites, the first is a bergundy burlap with cream sole and stripes. The second is a bright blue suede with yellow stripes, a colour combination that can never go wrong.
While crazy styles and bright colours are fun, there is something to be said about a nice pair of black or white sneakers that you can easily wear everyday. The classic gazelles come in a white with green stripes and also a black with white stripes. I also wanted to point out the Century, while not a well known classic Adidas, its a great sneaker that delivers great style.
For the girls this season we've got several really great styles in awesome colours. The Silverstreak and the spider come in great metalics and were originally track shoes so they make for super slick casual shoes with a light profile, pointed toe and a feminine touch.
The Silverstreak comes in silver with hazelnut brown suede stripes and leather details. Half of the sole is also in the brown suede. The Spider comes in a metallic green with turquoise details, the colour combination is great on this cute little sneaker for girls.
The Adidas Sleek Series is an original collection of feminine-ized Adidas classics. The first edition of the sleek series came out last year and was extremely popular. The Superstar, Pro-Model, Country Classic and Stan Smith have all been slimmed down and given a more girly look, with softer materials like suedes and satins; and softer more feminine colours. New this season is the Fafi collection. This execution was created around the personality and image of French street artist Fafi. Her extraordinary art creations are sexy and often portray liberated young women called the “Fafinettes”. The Fafinette characters appear on the sleek series shoes for Spring/Summer 2007.
The Sleek Series is a unique and creative limited edition series of sneakers finally created just for women, there are several other styles from the sleek series, like this one in camo with pink laces and stripe details.

There haven't been any new blogs recently as we have been swamped with the holiday season. But as Christmas draws to a close a wonderful Canadian tradition happens. Boxing Day. If you are from the USA you may be asking what Boxing Day is. Boxing day is that special time of year that starts the day after Christmas when retailers mark their wares down to get ready for the coming spring season.
So I wanted to give everyone an early heads up, if you have been salivating over any of Gravity Pope's shoes this season now is the time to come take a look at gravitypope.com because the Gravity Pope Boxing Week Sale begins December 26! All shoes, handbags, clothing and accessories are marked down 10-70%. So if you've been waiting to pick up your perfect pair of shoes or boots, now is the time to pick them up. See you there!
I remember when it happened last year. A group of innocuous looking vans cardboard boxes arrived in the Gravity Pope shipping and receiving department. We get a lot of Vans throughout the year here and so there was nothing particularly special about that, but when we opened the boxes, that's when people got excited. They were the Marc Jacobs limited edition Vans that we had seen on the Internet and in magazines. Sometimes its hard to get these limited edition styles in Canada, as we just don't have the population to buy enough of them, so often distributors don't even bring them into the country. Somehow, our buyers at Gravity Pope had managed to get a few boxes of these shoes into our stores, even our Vans rep had no idea how we got them.
When I heard that Vans w as continuing with the Marc Jacobs line, I didn't have much hope in the idea that we would get them for another season. I was pretty sure we just lucked out in spring '06. But another set of Vans boxes were opened to reveal the Marc Jacobs Vans, better late than never
We received a little bit of everything from MJ, a couple of Slip-ons, a couple of Chukka boots, three styles of Prison Issue Velcro shoes, a Sk8-hi hi top and an old skool low top.
The Vans Chukka boots are always a great lace up version of what you get from the slip-ons and I really like these ones with the corduroy suede. Again the sole is refined just enough to give the chukka boots a slightly sleeker look. To continue the duo tone theme, they come with two sets of laces (one dark, one light).
The Old Skool and the Sk8-hi that we got this year are a great deal less gaudy than the brown patent leather with blue trim styles that we got last year. A plain white smooth leather with charcoal trim and laces is perfect Marc Jacobs. They're clean, refined and still Vans with a twinge of punky fun. (that's my newest shoe descriptor, I think I may be over-using it).
The Prison Issue shoe has been one of my favourite Vans shoes for a long time. It was originally designed for the California prison system (hence the Velcro) and has been re-issued for today's Vans lover. Marc Jacobs has made these great versions in leather with matching soles and rubber toe-cap.
Apparently, less than 5000 of each style was made and so these vans can be pretty hard to find. We sold out of most of the styles in a matter of days last year, so we'll see how long these ones last! Check out the availability on gravitypope.com
